Civilization Reversed

A small piece of news on a renowned TV station, that did not attract enough attention, due to everyone's distraction by the Covid news and vaccinations, carried an astonishing message and trend. A trend in the media and public orientation that reflects a massive crack in a civilized world.

The news announced and celebrated a person that has been appointed for an important law enforcement organization board, normal right?  But the news was focusing on this person’s background affiliation and ideology, to the extent that shows he was chosen based on his ideological affiliation only!

I had to listen to the piece of news twice just to be certain about the content, but in fact it was true.

That was the first time to realize that people are appointed to serve in public positions, whether on the municipal, provincial or even federal level, based on their ideological, religious affiliation, and doctrines; specially in a country that is known to be one of the great nations adopting democracy, freedom, equality, secularism, and human rights.

Never thought that this great country would celebrate a person’s appointment based on his belief rather than his competence, or never imagined that capabilities and skills are defined by the faith, which is totally irrelevant for competency, being extremely personal matter.

Such a trend would raise many alarming facts. Is the main determinant for a person’s competency should be her or his knowledge, ethics, experience, and all aptitude factors or faith affiliation?

Would such criteria for appointment affect the impartiality of the appointee in handling issues related to citizens with other faiths or no faith at all?

Could this be a future basis for the choice of people holding public offices? Serving everyone in the community equally without bias and would this requirement be stated in resumes in the future? Like many jobs announcements where the applications have a section to state the ethnic background, that I do believe is unacceptable as well, and does not fit the stage of human civilization that we have reached.

I have seen this process of ethnic or religious screening and selection as discriminating, radical and regressive. Human beings around the globe regard our country as the home of freedom, civilization and equality, and their utmost hopes are to breakout from any country that follows a radical, fascist, or totalitarian regime, and to become one day citizens of our country, sheltered by the very principles of the human rights. Those rights that were founded by our late generations to ensure a better future for all the generations to come, those who paved the road for civilization as we understand it today, which we hope that the day to reverse our civilization would never come.
