Paris 2024 Olympic Games, A Bold Message to the World

By Emad Barsoum•August 2, 2024•3 min read

The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games sent shockwaves through the global community, particularly among religious communities.

The event, rich in symbolism and artistic expression, carried a bold message that resonated deeply with the principles of freedom of speech and expression—values that have been both celebrated and contested throughout modern history.

The ceremony was a spectacular display of France's commitment to liberty, creativity, and modernity. The themes explored in the event not only highlighted the importance of freedom of expression as a cornerstone of human progress but also inspired many with its bold message. This message, though inspiring to many, sparked significant controversy among conservative and radical theological and religious groups who felt their dogmas were challenged.

Freedom of speech has always been a catalyst for change. It was the lifeblood of the Enlightenment in Europe during the 17th century, a period that witnessed an era of unprecedented intellectual and cultural growth. The Enlightenment championed reason, science, and individualism. It manifested the great discoveries that led us to what we have in science and technology nowadays. It created great art that is still appreciated in our modern life, and magnificent music that is still alive and highly adored. Together, they laid the groundwork for modern civilization. This period demonstrated that creativity, fueled by the freedom to think and speak freely, is the mother of progress and the upliftment of humanity.

The Paris 2024 ceremony echoed this historical truth, reminding the world that the march of progress is indeed unstoppable despite the anger and resistance from certain quarters. It is a fair assertion that if conservative and radical groups demand respect for their beliefs, they must also extend that respect to the visions and views of progressive thinkers. Expressing diverse opinions and artistic visions should be protected, provided they do not pose a physical or moral threat to others.

Art, humanity, and creativity thrive in an environment where ideas can be freely exchanged. Attempting to suppress this exchange only creates fractures and deviations from the natural course of historical progress. The opening ceremony was a testament to this, using the global stage of the Olympics to champion the cause of free expression.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony was more than just a celebration of sports; it was a powerful statement about the essential nature of freedom of speech in driving human advancement. It reminded us that progress is built on the free exchange of ideas and that respecting diverse viewpoints is crucial for a harmonious and forward-moving world. It is evidence of historical determination.
